If this sounds familiar

Most executives are using AI like a search engine.

And then concluding it's "useful but not transformative." They're right about their experience — wrong about the cause.

i.

You type a vague question, glance at the answer, copy a sentence, and close the window. The "weak coffee" problem — technically AI, but watered down.

ii.

Your AI output is "fine," never excellent. So adoption plateaus, time savings stay marginal, and you quietly conclude the tools are overhyped.

iii.

Finance asks the obvious question — what did we actually get for the spend? The answers are vague, qualitative, anecdotal. The technology scaled. The discipline didn't.

iv.

You suspect there's a way to get analyst-grade output from these tools. You just haven't found the discipline that gets you there reliably.

"The executives who win the next decade will not be the ones who used AI first. They will be the ones who used it most precisely."
— from the introduction
A taste of what's inside

The six layers that separate analyst-grade output from filler.

From Chapter 3 — the framework that delivers more leverage than any other single habit you'll adopt.

Chapter 3 · The Anatomy of a High-Performance Prompt

The Six-Layer Framework

Each layer is optional in theory. Each is expensive to skip in practice. Commit them to memory and run through them before sending any prompt that matters.

1Role

Tell the AI who it is. Models calibrate vocabulary, depth, and assumed knowledge based on the role you assign. "Senior B2B marketer with 12 years of demand-gen experience" outperforms "expert marketer" every time.

2Context

The business situation it needs to know. The single most underused layer in executive prompts. Without it, AI defaults to averages — generic answers for the average company.

3Task

What you actually want done. Most prompts include only this layer, and usually with imprecision. "Help me with my Q3 board update" is not a task. It's a wish.

4Format

The shape of the output. A 250-word memo, a three-column table, a bulleted list with a closing recommendation. Specify before you ask.

5Constraints

What the output must avoid. No jargon. No hedging. Don't mention competitor X. Constraints sharpen output more than instructions do.

6Examples

One or two reference samples. "Match the tone of this memo I wrote last quarter." Examples teach the model your voice faster than any adjective ever will.

Weak
You are a good marketer. Write me a launch email.
Strong
You are a senior B2B marketer with twelve years of demand-gen experience in SaaS, writing for a CFO buyer-persona who is skeptical of marketing language. Draft a 180-word launch email...
